Hardwood plantations

Forestry Plantations Queensland manages almost 10,000 hectares of state-owned hardwood plantations on State forests, Crown freehold, rented private land and joint ventures on private land.

Species

Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd’s hardwood species are mainly Spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora spp. variegata) and Western white gum (Eucalyptus argophloia) with Gympie messmate (Eucalyptus cloeziana) on higher rainfall coastal sites.

Uses

Hardwood timber uses include house framing and trusses, cladding, internal and external joinery and flooring, fencing, landscaping, retaining walls, boat building, external construction and utility poles. The timber also has application for engineered wood products such as finger-joints and laminated beams, plywood and furniture.

Locations

Forestry Plantations Queensland's commercial hardwood plantations are located in south-east Queensland. Most are in the South Burnett region around Kingaroy and Wondai, on the Binjour plateau near Gayndah and Mundubbera, and on the coastal plain between Beerburrum and Gympie.

The Corporation's aim is to have 20,000 hectares of hardwood plantations growing in targeted areas, including the Burnett, Moreton/Esk, Bundaberg and Sunshine Coast regions, by 2025.
