Our sustainable forest management systems independent accreditation under the Australian Forestry Standard AS 4708-2007 (AFS) provides customers, stakeholders, neighbours and other forest users, with the assurance that our forest assets are managed in a demonstrably sustainable manner.
Around 60% of FPQ managed lands are allocated to sustainable hardwood and softwood plantation production. The remaining 40% are managed for fire protection, conservation and other community values, specifically public recreation.
The Australian Forestry Standard was developed in 2002 by the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in partnership with the National Association of Forest Industries, forest growers and the then Plantation Timber Association of Australia.
It is the first Australian standard of its kind and sets criteria for sustainable forest management from an economic, social, environmental and cultural perspective.
Mutual recognition of the AFS with other similar national schemes by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) confers international status on the AFS.
AFS certification enhances Forestry Plantations Queensland's already excellent environmental credentials, including its earlier certification (as DPI Forestry) to the international environmental standard ISO 14001.
The AFS goes further than ISO 14001 by focusing on sustainable forest management, addressing aspects such as maintaining biological diversity, ecosystem health and vitality, soil and water quality and protecting indigenous cultural and spiritual values.
